Imported or Indian-Made BLDC Motor Machines: What to Compare

Many motor makers in India receive quotations from overseas suppliers as well as Indian ones. The machine price is only one line of the comparison. These are the points that decide what the machine really costs and how soon it earns.

1. Landed cost, not quoted price

An overseas quotation is usually given ex-works or FOB in a foreign currency. To it you add sea freight and insurance, basic customs duty and social welfare surcharge on the landed value, IGST, port and clearing charges and inland transport. IGST can normally be claimed as input credit; the customs duty cannot. Ask your customs broker for the duty on the exact tariff line before you compare. A machine made in India is quoted in rupees with GST, delivered to your plant.

2. Time to first good motor

Count the weeks for manufacture, shipping, customs clearance and the travel of the supplier's engineers for commissioning. With a machine built in India, the same engineers who built it install it, and they can return within days if something needs changing.

3. Trial on your own parts

Ask whether you can see the machine running your stator and rotor before you pay the balance. At our works in Gurugram you can attend the trial in person and take the results with you.

4. Service and spares

Every production machine stops at some point. Ask where the service engineer travels from, how long that takes, and where the spare parts are kept. Ask who will change the tooling when you introduce a new motor.

5. Fit to your volume

Lines designed for very large automotive programmes are built for one motor at very high output. A fan, pump or e-rickshaw motor maker often needs smaller machines that can be changed between models and extended step by step.

When importing makes sense

For some special processes and very high-volume lines, an overseas supplier may be the right choice. The comparison should be made on landed cost, commissioning time and support, with both quotations in front of you.

Ten questions to ask any supplier

  • What is the price delivered to my plant, with all duties and taxes?
  • In which currency do I pay, and on what terms?
  • When will the first good motor come off the machine?
  • Can I see a trial on my own parts before dispatch?
  • Who installs the machine and trains my operators?
  • Where does the service engineer travel from?
  • Where are spare parts stocked?
  • Who supplies change tooling for a new motor?
  • Which wear parts are standard items I can buy locally?
  • Which plants like mine are running this machine today?
